Flower arrangements made beautiful

Flowers add life and color to a room. The art of flower arranging has been around since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Buying professional arrangements can get quite expensive, but you can easily learn to create your own beautiful arrangements from home with the flowers from your own backyard.

When creating a stationary — or table — arrangement, there are several shapes to consider. Dome arrangements are a simple symmetrical dome of flowers. Triangle arrangements have tall central flowers and shorter flowers on the side. Horizontal arrangements are low and symmetrical while vertical arrangements are tall and thin. When deciding on a shape, consider the space where you will display the arrangement.

Next, consider the shapes of different flowers and what you will need to create your chosen silhouette. The three main categories flowers fall into are focal, line, and filler.

Focal flowers, as the name suggests, provide a focal point for an arrangement. They are often the largest and brightest. Typically these include roses and peonies. Line flowers create your silhouette and include delphiniums and gladioluses. Fillers are just that — they fill out the silhouette of the arrangement. Baby’s breath, ferns, limonium, and other smaller flowers usually take on this job.

Once you’ve decided on a shape, color is the next step. Since color helps  to set a mood, it’s important to think about when choosing your color scheme. Keep in mind which flowers complement each other through their color, shape, texture, etc. When you start to create the actual arrangement, balance is important. Don’t put all your focal flowers on the same side. Cut the flowers to the appropriate length based on the container you’re using. Place your line flowers first to outline the overall shape of the arrangement. Add focal flowers, placing them at the center of the arrangement. And last but not least, use your filler flowers to “fill out” any empty spaces.

Remember, cut flowers need water to thrive. It is best to change every day if possible. If you fill your vase with warm water, the blooms will open immediately. Cool water will delay their opening, helping them to live longer.

Tips to Remember:
  • The arrangement’s flowers and their colors help to create the mood.
  • When deciding on a silhouette, consider the space where your arrangement will go.
  • Bright and cheerful focal flowers should be the center of attention in an arrangement.
  • Add filler and non-floral elements to an arrangement for interest and texture.
  • Cut fresh flower stems under water and at an angle so they’ll retain the most water.
  • Be sure to water flowers regularly to prolong their life.
