Time to Tune In
If you listen to KISS Country on weekday mornings, you’ve probably heard the bantering of Eddie Foxx and Sharon Green. Their morning show, which airs from 6 to 10, is always entertaining. Eddie explains their goal is to “make ‘em laugh, make ‘em cry, tick ‘em off, but never, ever bore the living crap out of ‘em!” But whether you tune in to laugh with them or to listen to great country music, you may be curious about who Sharon Green really is.
It would be hard to imagine Sharon as the shy, introverted type, but in high school she really didn’t talk a lot — she didn’t have to since her twin sister, Karen, normally did all the talking. She began to like country western music when she was about 18, and upon graduating high school, realized that she wanted to be a part of the music world. Sharon attended the Art Institute of Atlanta and earned a degree in Music Business. Through the degree, she learned to come out of her shell and speak publicly. It didn’t take her long to realize that being a radio personality was perfect for her. She confesses, “I love everything about my job. I can’t wait to get up and get on the air each day. Those four hours are my favorite time of the day.”
Sharon has been a part of morning shows in Georgia and Alabama. Five years ago, when a position opened up at KISS, Sharon came to Asheville and began working with Eddie Foxx. “He’s the best partner I’ve ever had,” she explains. “We really hit it off immediately.” While the two may be known for their daily bickering, the truth is that they really care about each other and enjoy their relationship.
“I love the music, and I love the artists. I am trying my best to bring together Nashville and Asheville,” says Sharon. Besides being immersed in the music she loves, Sharon also has some fun perks from her job. In the past, she and Eddie have been able to fly in B17 Bombers, and incredibly enough, meet almost every country star they’ve ever wanted to. Sharon admits that her favorite artist is Keith Urban because he’s “the whole package” besides just being an incredible songwriter.
However, Sharon claims that the best part of her job is meeting listeners. On remotes, Sharon and Eddie love to watch listeners’ reactions upon seeing them for the first time. “We never seem to look like how they’ve envisioned us, but I love meeting them,” Sharon explains. “People always want to share their life stories, and that’s what really warms my heart.” She has found that her listeners are all unique in their own way. Her goal is to connect with all of them in some way — to evoke some kind of emotion whether it’s laughter or tears. No matter what, she always tries to give her honest opinion. Sometimes, she admits, that can be misunderstood. In conquering her fear of public speaking, she also had to get past her fear of being wrong and being judged. Sharon really tries to be sensitive and not to offend anyone who might be listening.
“My job has done a lot for me. It’s helped my self confidence both professionally and personally. I’ve found that radio is a way to be me,” she laughs. As for Karen, her twin, she’s happy about her sister’s blossoming personality and thinks that her job is cool.
Now Sharon is making another important change in her life. She’s decided to be a part of the Lighten Up 4 Life campaign. To help her achieve her goal, she’s taking dance lessons, since she’s wanted to learn how to dance for as long as she can remember. “The dancing will not only be a fun new hobby, but it’ll also be great exercise,” she says. She wants to interest her listeners in fitness and dancing by letting them know there is a place to dance country western style in Asheville.
On February 13th, there will be a country dance — Dancing with the DJs — held at the Asheville Ballroom & Dance Centre on Sweeten Creek Road. There is no charge to attend the dance but due to space limitation, only 200 people will be admitted. Included is a line dance lesson, a dance exhibition by Eddie and Sharon, and a drawing for a great door prize.
